stunning Skomer

I was lucky enough to go twice this year to Skomer island off the coast of Pembrokeshire, and boy did it deliver. Magical island with more than atlantic puffins to see. I saw lots of wheatear, rock pipit, cough, razor bills, guillemot and lots more - but it is the feel of the place as much anything that leaves its impression on you.
There are Iron Age settlement remains, and evidence of occupation dating back to the Neolithic period. I felt some intangible sense of the history as I walked around. Rugged, dramatic in places, beautiful in others. It is an absolute joy to walk around.
Whilst the charms of Skomer are many, the main reason I was there, like most, was to photograph puffins. The different times of the year offer different opportunities. At the end of April there are carpets of bluebells and spring flowers, creating a beautiful backdrop to images. Go in June and you get to see more puffins and with sand eels in their beaks to feed their young.
Windy both times I went, which has challenges, the bigger the lens the more it gets buffeted by strong gusts. My 800mm (which you def don't need btw, 400/500 is plenty) acted like a wind sock! I did enjoy though the puffins in the air, the strong winds held them up and actually made it easier to shoot them.
Whenever you go, you will be treated to an amazing place full of natural wonder.
